About     Me

Clarinetist and Saxophonist Andrew J. Buckley performs a diverse repertoire ranging from Bach, Brahms, and Mozart, to Stravinsky, Nielsen, and Berio. Buckley’s unique presentation of classical and contemporary works, paired with mixed media elements, is redefining what a classical concert experience is truly about. Recently, Andrew has performed in notable concert halls around the country such as Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra, and Carnegie Hall, former home of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
As an active chamber and solo musician, Andrew respects and embraces the standard classical repertoire while fusing in more contemporary works and premieres of new music by living composers. As a member of the Earthtones Saxophone quartet, Buckley has performed a range of repertoire from Bach transcriptions to more recent compositions by well know composers such as Joel Love and John Leszczynski. Additionally, Buckley and the other members of the Earthtones Quartet won second place at the 2018 regional competition of the Music Teachers National Association. Furthermore, Andrew is a founding member of The Goodwin Avenue Trio; a piano, cello, and clarinet trio based out of The University of Illinois.
Andrew’s most recent project, entitled “Contrasts”, seeks to redefine classical music concerts. The goal of “Contrasts” is to combine classical and contemporary repertoire with other forms of mixed media such as lighting design and visual art. Through this innovative programing, Buckley hopes that classical music concerts will become more open, enjoyable, and engaging for all audience members. In addition, “Contrasts” aims to pair with local school systems to bring classical and contemporary music into schools to teach the value of teamwork, dedication, and the power of expression.
In May of 2020, Andrew received his Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music in Cleveland Ohio. As a student there, Buckley was the recipient of the E.S & M.R. Griffiths Music Talent Scholarship, the GAR Foundation Conservatory Scholarship, and the Professors Alan & Mary Squire Memorial Award. Andrew currently attends the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he is pursuing a Masters degree in Clarinet Performance and Literature on a full Graduate Tuition Scholarship. Additionally, Mr. Buckley is an Eagle Scout of the Boy Scouts of America.
As a student at Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music, Andrew frequently performed with large ensembles such as the Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Ensemble in addition to multiple musical theatre productions as a woodwind specialist. In addition, Mr. Buckley also held the position of Conducting Apprentice with the Conservatory Wind Ensembles for the 2018 and 2019 seasons. In this position, Buckley conducted numerous concerts with both ensembles, concluding with his world premiere performance of new works by award winning composers Nabil Abad, and Steve Chauvette, with the Symphonic Wind Ensemble as part of the 2019 Ovation Festival.
Outside of Baldwin Wallace, during the summers of 2018 and 2019, Andrew performed as the Principal Clarinetist with the College Light Opera Company (CLOC) Orchestra in Falmouth, Cape Cod, giving over 110 performances during his time there. During the summer of 2019, Buckley also held the position of orchestra manager. Throughout his time at CLOC, Mr. Buckley collaborated with Broadway musicians, music directors, and producers such as Grant Strom, Andrew Bourgoin, Robert Schneider, Beth Burrier, Miles Plant, and Andrew Crust of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to his active performing schedule, Andrew is also a licensed public-school music educator and private instructor. He has had teaching experience with a variety of instrumental ensembles between grades 5 and 12 and has appeared as a guest clinician at local area high schools in New York and Ohio, such as Greece Athena High School, Avon Lake High School, and Frontier High School. Andrew currently maintains a small studio of private students, and is a volunteer clarinet instructor for the ILLuminate program which provides free private lessons to Chicago Public Schools music students.
Andrew performs on Buffet Crampon R13 clarinets as well as Vandoren mouthpieces and reeds.
